What it's all about
I was inspired to organise this event as I am seeing, hearing about and reading about more violence, gun and knife crime, with younger victims.
The innovation surrounding this event is apparent as I am not aware of any effective avenue for these young people to voice their concerns and see aspects of these crimes from different perspectives. Also there is no event that brings together organisations such as the police and Trident together with young people to share ideas and work with one another to address and attempt to tackle gun/knife crime.
This event seeks to get young people more active in tackling these issues and encourage them to go through the right channels i.e. Crime stoppers, Trident, through schools and youth clubs and, Mentoring and showing positive examples to the younger kids that look up to them. Posters, adverts and music can be effective on a short term basis as they only do so much at the time, and once the advert /song is forgotten or the novelty wears off, the attitude of those it is aimed at stays the same and this is what we have to actively try and change.
Out of control wants to bring together the suggestions for the causes and ideas for solutions from anti gun-crime organisations, community organisations but more importantly the target audience, the young people aged 13-19.
I am sure that everybody can learn from each other and come together to help our communities. I hope you will be able to help us create a successful day which achieves the ultimate goal which is to; encourage and promote young people to do the right thing and not carry knives and guns, enable them to look seriously at the real life consequences of such actions, report crime and have an anti gun/knife attitude.

Thanks for posting your great idea on Junction49 - we're here to help you turn your idea for community change into reality.
I think the issue that you want to tackle is really current and the way you wish to tackle it is refreshing. Junction49 is all about encouraging and supporting young people to change their communities for the better, so we definitely believe in your youth-involvement approach to tackling gun-crime.
We are currently offering Junction49 users the opportunity to win up to £1000 to turn their ideas into reality, which will hopefully help you tackle the issue of funding. You can find further information about this scheme by going to this page.
We will put our thinking caps on and have a think about who you could partner with, so keep checking back as we will post another comment soon outlining groups that you can maybe contact.
Another Junction49 user is putting together a film about gun crime which will be viewed by young-people across London's communities. You can see his idea (and message him) by going to http://www.junction49.co.uk/chapel/article1449.html .
If you have any other questions, then just get in touch.
Loving the idea!
Ella
I have some good news for you - our judges have discussed your idea in relation to each of our criteria and have decided that we can award you some Junction49 funds to run your event!
Have you thought about how you will be able to show that your event has a measurable positive impact on the local community? Can you explain this briefly?
For your idea to continue beyond the initial funding from us you should think about asking partner organisations to host events like this in the future - an organisation that gets involved and sees the value of what you're doing is likely to consider this!
Your next step is to decide on your budget and post it up here on Junction49. We are able to fund £300, but could possibly provide more if you can justify it in your budget breakdown.
You'll need to remember to consider:
- travel expenses for young people (and you if you need to visit organisations beforehand)
- promotion/recruitment
- incentive, do the young people need one to attend?
- rent, if you have a location in mind and they charge you to use the space
- stationery, if you're writing any letters etc
Please can you also email a contact phone number (in fact ideally a mobile and landline) to help@junction49.co.uk?
Can you also add your birthdate on to your personal profile on Junction49 by going to my stuff at the top, then edit personal info on the side bar.
Information about projects related to these issues running in London can be found on the London Against Gun and Knife Crime website.
There is also an interesting discussion about this from the UK Youth Parliament
Hope to hear from you soon!
Cheers,
Zoë
I would just like to begin by thanking Junction 49 as they and Paddington Development Trust are the only organisations of all those contacted that have provided funding/resources to allow this event to happen and hopefully become a success.
The event out of control is progressing very well; we have a venue provided by Paddington Development Trust. PDT are my former employers as I used to work with young people from the local estates at The Stowe youth club. Out of control will be taking place in August and we have a number of organisations taking part like the metropolitan police, Youth matters and Crimestoppers. At the moment we are working on the flyers for the event and I will keep you updated on the progress of this event.
Thank you Junction 49.
